Daniel Sloate was a writer and translator with more than a dozen books published, including Rimbaud’s Illuminations, and a series of Quebec poets in translation. Born in Windsor, Ontario, Sloate attended the University of Western Ontario (Honours B. A. in French and English), and then spent 15 years in France where he obtained a doctorate in French literature from the Sorbonne. He taught for many of those years at the Translators’ School in Paris, then came back to Canada where he taught for 26 years in the Linguistics Department of the Université de Montréal.
