Life is in balance for Sam Wiseman, the co-owner of Dickens & Company, a Montreal bookstore, until he discovers the corpse of one of his customers, a McGill University professor, in the professor’s office. Wiseman joins detective Gaston Lemieux in the investigation, supplying literary analysis to help solve the crime. In various guises and locales, Montreal is as integral a character in King’s mystery as is his protagonist. And in a wonderful literary conceit, two of the city’s best-loved English-language bookstores, The Word and the Double Hook, appear as themselves in the novel. rn
