E.K. Wicher

E.K. Wicher is the pen name of Giles Morrell, who was born in London, England and immigrated to Canada in 1981. He lived in Calgary Alberta for several years before moving east to Chelsea, Quebec, and more recently to Saint Adele in the Laurentians. By profession a geologist, he published his first novel, The Leda late in 2020 on a geological theme. The Blackwater Sailing Club is his second effort and describes the invasion of the new republic of Quebec by its southern neighbour as a gesture of goodwill. Both stories take place in west Quebec.

The Gyre Trilogy is very different—quirky murder mysteries set in the Great Pacific Garbage Dump (or Gyre) with an alien octopus as the obligatory amateur detective. This is a dystopian waterworld where plastic refuse becomes a vital resource.

In 2025, he published Total Depth, which follows the search of a father for a son given up for adoption at birth. Set in the global drilling boom of the 1970s, the story flips around the world on various offshore oil rigs, plumbing depths both geological and psychological.
