Joan Ruvinsky was born and raised in Concord, Massachusetts. It was Ralph Waldo Emerson’s great grandson, then in his 70s, who taught her as a child to ride, to shoot, and to love the outdoors. She has a B.Sc. in physics from McGill University and studied linguistics at the graduate level. An unsatisfying inquiry into systems of knowledge led directly to poetry. Currently living in the Eastern Townships of Quebec, she divides her time between bringing yoga to rural communities, editing and translating manuscripts on Advaita Vedanta and non-dualism, and travelling as often as possible to the southwest for hiking, backpacking and solo wilderness retreats.
