Lewis J. Poteet taught at Concordia University. He compiled (with coauthors) several dictionaries of slang including The South Shore Phrase Book: A Nova Scotia Dictionary, Hockey Talk (with son Aaron), Plane Talk (with Martin Stone), Car and Motorcycle Slang (with brother Jim Poteet), Cop Talk (again with Aaron Poteet), and Talking Country. He was Canadian contributor to the new Partridge Dictionary of Slang. He wrote and published many essays on language and culture. Raised in the U.S. Southwest, he was eldest son of missionaries to Africa. For many summers he lived on the ocean on Nova Scotia’s South Shore, but Montreal has been his home since 1967.
