Born in Rouyn-Noranda, Valérie Plante studied anthropology and museology, and then worked in community and cultural sectors, before becoming a prominent figure in Québec politics. Elected in 2013 as councillor of the arrondissement de Ville-Marie, she made history in 2017 when she was the first woman elected as mayor of Montreal.
