Patricia Claxton

Patricia Claxton was born in Kingston, Ontario, spent most of her childhood in India, and eventually came to Montreal, where she graduated from The Study School, McGill University (B.A.), and l’Université de Montréal (M.A. Translation). She began working as a freelance translator in 1964 and taught translation for eight years at l’Université de Montréal. A certified member of the Ordre des traducteurs et interprètes agréés du Québec, she served four years on its Council. She was also founding president of the Literary Translators’ Association of Canada. Besides her literary and other translations, she has written articles, addresses, and briefs, mainly on various aspects of translation. She received the Governor General’s Award for translation in 1987 and Canada Council Honorable Mentions for translation in 1973, 1980, and 1986. She also was shortlisted for the Governor General’s Award in 1990 and 1994.
