Ashok Chandwani was a Canadian journalist of East Indian descent based in Montreal. He was born in an Indian refugee camp to Hindu parents who had fled Pakistan following the Indo-Pakistani separation war. He immigrated to Canada from India in 1973, and in 1979, began working at the the Montreal Gazette. He wrote a weekly Monday column for the newsapaper based on his experiences as an immigrant. He was also an assistant management editor and restaurant critic. He later also worked for CBC Radio. Ashok won several journalism awards, including a Media Human Rights Award with Glen Allen for a series on racism in Canada in 1982. In 2002, he bought the Old Montreal restaurant Au Cépage. In 2003, he died during a liver transplant operation.
