The End of the War

This is the second volume of a sweeping historical novel. The story of Ernest Fortin begins in 1885, when Wilfrid Laurier addressed a public meeting called to protest the hanging of Louis Riel. In the ensuing riots, Ernest’s father is killed. Ernest is taken under the protection of two friends – one a rising young priest, the other a politician. They do their work too well. Ernest grows up to believe in neither Laurier nor Macdonald, in neither French nor English. War comes and Montreal is once again the scene of riots. This time over conscription. The story of violence and tragedy is told again – and yet again. There is no end to war.
