Co-published in 2000 by Arsenal Pulp Press, Vancouver’s Artspeak Gallery, and the Kamloops Art Gallery, Monika Kin Gagnon’s Other Conundrums is a collection of essays about Canada’s most productive multicultural artists. Already a notable art critic and curator, Gagnon takes this opportunity to explore the contemporary status of ethnic heritage and cultural diversity in Canada. Here, she offers provocative insights into the artists whose work challenges traditional definitions of multiculturalism. Her essays offer overviews of such artists as Dana Claxton, Jamelie Hassan, Shani Mootoo, and Paul Wong. The book includes a forward by award-winning writer Larissa Lai, as well as numerous images of the artwork discussed. Other Conundrums is considered a worthwhile, uniquely Canadian contribution to the ever-growing international analysis of multicultural art.
