In Search of Paradise by Susan Gabori
Finalist for The QSPELL Prize for Non-Fiction in 1994
In Search of Paradise is the story of an Italian family which, having lived for generations in an isolated mountain town in Abruzzi, Italy, is forced by World War II and economic hardship to pull up roots and re-establish itself in Canada. Presented as a series of first-person narratives, it illustrates the difficulties of immigration in the 1950’s and the subsequent ambivalence of life in a new country.
