Selling Illusions by Neil Bissoondath

According to Neil Bissoondath, Canada’s multicultural policy ultimately achieves the very opposite of what it was created to do. Far from celebrating Canada’s ‘mosaic’, it contributes to the perpetuation of gross stereotypes by transforming cultures into commodities. Hundreds, sometimes thousands of years of history are reduced to weekend festivals of costumes, traditional dances, and exotic foods. There is no shape, there is no context. It is ‘culture Disneyfied’, stripped of the significance of the past and made acceptable only as entertainment, rather than as an accurate reflection of a people’s way of life.
