Tell Me a Story, Tell Me the Truth by Gina Roitman

Story

This debut collection of nine connected stories shadows Leah, the child of Holocaust survivors, as she travels the route between childhood and maturity. Growing up in Montreal in the mid-twentieth century, Leah is surrounded by the ghosts of people she’s never met and is steeped in the mores that reference a culture gone well before her birth. As an outsider and displaced person in an era when everyone is looking for identity in Quebec, she struggles to break from her past and her surroundings. In the process, she finds ways to stifle Old World fears, launches a rebellion, suffers love found and lost, and the pain of being helpless in the face of irreparable circumstances – a family forever tallying its dead. What underlines these stories is the vulnerability of always feeling out-of-place.
