Maurice Podbrey CM was born in South Africa in 1934. Upon his arrival in Canada he became assistant director of the English section of the National Theatre School before cofounding the Centaur Theatre in 1969.

Podbrey launched the career of playwright David Fennario , nurtured the careers of Vittorio Rossi and dozens of actors, directors and designers. He is largely responsible for bringing the works of Athol Fugard to Canadian, if not North American, attention. He is the recipient of the Chalmers Award for artistic direction (1995) and is a Member of the Order of Canada.
