Hugh Hood
Hugh Hood was born in Toronto in 1928 to a French-Canadian mother and an anglophone father from Nova Scotia. He spent most of his life in Toronto and Montreal. Remaining true to his bicultural background, for many years he taught English literature at the Université de Montréal. Weaned on the Scriptures and educated in Catholic schools, he once described himself as “through and through” a Catholic writer. His body of work – about 30 books – contains several excellent collections of short stories and essays and the multi-volume The New Age/Le Nouveau Siècle series of novels. One of the original members of the Montreal Story Tellers performance group, Hood frequently read his stories in Montreal high schools, community colleges, and universities in the early and mid-1970s. He died in 2000.
