Les D. Brown was born in Montreal, and grew up there and in rural communities in the Ottawa Valley. When he was eight, his family relocated to the United States, settling in suburban Los Angeles. In 1969, at the age of twenty, and still a Canadian citizen, he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He fought in Vietnam as an infantryman with the First Infantry Division and later with the 101st Airborne Division.

After his discharge, he worked for a time as a motorcycle mechanic, before becoming a police officer with the Los Angeles Police Department. In 1977, he left the department and returned to Canada.

Les D. Brown lives with his family on a farm in Farrellton, Quebec.
