Gabriel Safdie
Gabriel Safdie began to explore the possibilities inherent in imagist lyricism while doing an MA under Earle Birney; but it was in the context of subsequent work at the University of London and the Sorbonne on the theory of William Carlos Williams and modernist trends, that he first attempted a distinct imagist poetics in which ‘situation is sculpted into tangible temporal form.’ Since his return to Montreal in the seventies, he has been teaching literature and creative writing at Dawson College.
After a twenty year span of teaching Literature, Drama, and Creative Writing in London, Paris, and Montreal’s Dawson College, Gabriel Safdie’s activities now range from music and theatre to travel and commerce. However, throughout his working career, it is writing that has continued to be his one constant endeavour, and the writing of poetry and drama have been the most consistent of all.
