Merryl Hammond trained in nursing, sociology, and did her PhD in South Africa. She and husband immigrated to Canada in 1988 and settled in Montreal. They have five adult children. She has worked as a public health consultant – mainly with Indigenous communities – for over 22 years. She was diagnosed with bipolar disorder (manic depression) in 2008.
